But first…

Pretty big news yesterday on the pipeline front.

The day kicked off with Mark Carney in Vancouver standing next to David Eby, where he announced something like $20 billion on various things for B.C. — including a $10 billion expansion of the Roberts Bank terminal.

But Carney’s mic drop happened when he said the tanker ban along the northern coast of B.C. was staying put.

A few hours later, Carney was in Calgary standing next to Danielle Smith, where he announced Alberta’s new oil pipeline would be taking a southern route to Vancouver — which explains the need to expand Roberts Bank.

There’s a lot to unpack here, so we’ll cover it next week.

In the meantime, the other big story these days is taxpayers are buying 2,200 new, vacant condos in B.C. from developers who are struggling to sell them.

We break it down below, along with a poll for you to vote on where you stand.

Have a great weekend,

It’s a plan worth testing

Thousands of newly built B.C. condos are sitting empty while affordability keeps slipping further out of reach.

Now, Ottawa and Victoria want to buy them at deep discounts and turn them into rent-to-own homes, betting speed matters more than ideology.

If it works, families could get into homes faster while developers free up their capital to restart construction.

It's a bailout in disguise

Governments say this will unlock new supply and make homes more affordable for buyers, but critics see something else: taxpayers rescuing developers who gambled on building overpriced condos the market won’t buy.

With key details still vague and a bureaucracy yet to be built, this is an expensive idea that won’t help affordability, but will shift the burden from rich developers onto taxpayers.
